Heart Machine is an American independent video game development studio based out of Los Angeles, California. The studio was founded by Alex Preston (nicknamed Alx Preston as an artist name). The company was establishged in 2013 by Preston in Glitch Space, an open co-operative office area he had helped previously establish in Culver City, California for other independent developers, though it was originally founded following the success of a crowdfunding campaign of the studio's first game, Hyper Light Drifter, to support development of the title.
Preston headed the development of Hyper Light Drifter during and after the development, and saw it release in 2016 to generally positive reviews and receiving several gaming award nominations, and winning some too. The name "Heart Machine" is derived from various medical conditions related to congenital heart disease, which Preston suffers from, and which also served as inspiration for Hyper Light Drifter.
The studio announced its next title, Solar Ash Kingdom, on March 13, 2019, to be published on Windows by Annapurna Interactive. According to Preston on Twitter, the studio has been working on Solar Ash Kingdom for some time after finishing up the release of Hyper Light Drifter, and the new game will feature "a whole new set of incredible tech and key innovations".
